Sample proposal: How to improve relations at work

Introduction

Last month’s company performance report showed that the employees of the Sales department have a diminished satisfaction compare to other departments. The employees complain about their work load and a changed dress code policy. According to the new dress code policy an elegant suit with a tie is required for men and a white blouse with a black skirt is required for women. It seems that the Sales department’s manager has tensed relations with his subordinates. I would like to propose some ways in which the situation can be improved.

Work load

Some members of the Sales department recently got an assignment from their manager to find ways of increasing sales. The current economic climate has a negative effect on sales. The staff of this department stayed in a hotel on weekend to develop a plan of increasing sales. After hard working and having finished that plan on Sunday, they did not receive any days off, but had to start working right away on Monday. It caused some tension between the Sales department’s employees and their manager. I talked to the employees of the department and could understand the reason of their dissatisfaction.

I suggest that this department gets an extra bonus for their hard work that weekend. It would be also better to organize such a ‘brainstorm’ in a less intensive way next time.

New dress code policy

We have several departments in our company, but only the Sales department has to change their clothing style from casual to formal. According to their manager, all members of this department should look more representative to impress our clients. His idea, undoubtedly, is very attractive in terms of creating a positive image of the Sales department in the clients’ eye. However, Sales department’s employees got depressed because their colleagues from other departments wear casual clothes and look and feel more relaxed.

I suggest to introduce the new dress code policy to all departments. In this way, the company appears to treat everyone equally.

Conclusion

These two problems can be resolved as well as similar problems in the future can be prevented if we inform all people in our company about coming changes timely. Proper communication between managerial staff and other employees is needed; a rewarding policy should be communicated and any changes should be discussed with staff members of each department in advance.
