Questions about Multimodal transport

Business CrossRoads Consultancy received a number of questions after its presentation Multimodal transport at the Business in motion forum in Chelaybsink, Russia: How do you assess the current state of the transport and logistics system inRussia? How is it integrated into the global logistics system? For the time being Russia has faced a problem of container yards shortage. Was there a similar problem in the West, and if it was, what kind of   solutions to this problem have been applied?

The director of Business CrossRoads Consultancy Jan Jansen gave the following answers:

1. Russia is the largest country in the world, so it is quite difficult to give an answer on this question. Between the large cities (>500 000 inhabitants) there are good roads and railroads. In more remote areas it is of course more difficult situation, especially because of the long Russian winter.
2. The integration is of course not perfect. Trade flows are still a problem from Russia to Europe and vice a versa, because of the EU and Russian legislation. The entrance of Russia in the WTO might give a boost to get rid of the complex paper work hampering the doing business with Western Europe.
3. Yes, we had and still have. Solution could be investing in the storage infrastructure (good examples – Europort Rotterdam, multimodal transport center in Venlo etc.) by both the government and the private companies.

1. Россия – это самая большая страна в мире, поэтому трудно дать ответ на этот вопрос. Между большими городами ( больше 500 000 жителей) хорошие дороги и железнордорожные пути. В отдалённых районах ситуация сложнее, особенно eсли учесть длинную русскую зиму.
2. Интреграция логистической системы России  в мировую систему недостаточна. Налаживание торговых потоков из Европы в Россию и в противоположном направлении всё ещё проблематично из-за различия в законодательных норамх Европейского Союза и России. Вхождение Россив WTO ( World Trade Organization) возможно поможет избавиться от этих сложных бумажных процедур, препятствующих ведению бизнеса с Западной Европой.
3. Да, у нас были проблемы с нехваткой контейнерных площадок и всё ещё есть. Решение может быть найдено в инвестировании правительством и частными компаниями в складскую инфраструктуру (хорошими примерами являются Europort в Роттердаме и мультимодальный транспортный центр в Венло, Голландия).
