Since 1992 the Protection of the Atmosphere indicator is on the list of Sustainability Indicators (SIs) developed by the United Nations during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit (Source: Simon Bell & Stephen Morse, 2008).
Transport accounts for 6.3 billion tons of CO2 per year globally, from which 4,6 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are caused by road traffic, this makes up 17% of the total emissions of CO2 (Source: Auto in cijfers, 2012).
Undoubtedly, such a high level of CO2 emissions influences the environment and the quality of life in a negative way.
